  1. County on the W coast of the Republic of
  2. Ireland, in the province of Munster; area
  3. 3,190 sq km/1,231 sq mi; population (1986)
  4. 91,000. Shannon airport is here. The
  5. coastline is rocky and dangerous, and inland
  6. Clare is an undulating plain, with mountains
  7. on the east, west, and northwest, the chief
  8. range being the Slieve Bernagh mountains in
  9. the SE rising to over 518 m/1,700 ft. The
  10. principal rivers are the Shannon and its
  11. tributary, the Fergus. There are over 100
  12. lakes in the county, including Lough Derg on
  13. the eastern border. The county town is Ennis.
  14. At Ardnachusha, 5 km/3 mi N of Limerick, is
  15. the main power station of the Shannon
  16. hydroelectric installations. The county is
  17. said to be named after Thomas de Clare, an
  18. Anglo-Norman settler to whom this area was
  19. granted 1276.
