County on the W coast of the Republic of
Ireland, in the province of Munster; area
3,190 sq km/1,231 sq mi; population (1986)
91,000. Shannon airport is here. The
coastline is rocky and dangerous, and inland
Clare is an undulating plain, with mountains
on the east, west, and northwest, the chief
range being the Slieve Bernagh mountains in
the SE rising to over 518 m/1,700 ft. The
principal rivers are the Shannon and its
tributary, the Fergus. There are over 100
lakes in the county, including Lough Derg on
the eastern border. The county town is Ennis.
At Ardnachusha, 5 km/3 mi N of Limerick, is
the main power station of the Shannon
hydroelectric installations. The county is
said to be named after Thomas de Clare, an
Anglo-Norman settler to whom this area was
granted 1276.
